Rayon Crepe, tell me more, you gorgeous girl.

Have you ever read the back of your t-shirt tag and saw 50% Cotton 50% Rayon and thought to yourself ugh, polyester. Rayon just sounds like a synthetic fiber, doesn't it? Well, let me answer the question of "is Rayon a synthetic fiber?" No, it is not. Well not entirely. It is considered a semi-synthetic fiber.

So, what is Rayon? Well, to put it simply, it is a fabric made from the cellulose of plant fibers, usually wood pulp. It does take a lot of chemicals to make this transformation from wood pulp into a textile, so it is considered a semi-synthetic fiber.

Rayon is soft and has beautiful drape. It can create a wide variety of clothing. This blog is to show you what can be made with the Rayon Crepe WayMaker Fabrics has to offer.

I suppose, I should first talk a little about our Rayon Crepe. What makes the "Crepe" part of Rayon Crepe. Crepe is a very distinctive fabric type. It usually has a bit of a shine to it, and a distinctive look to the fabric.
In this picture, you can see the texture of the fabric. The texture is created by the fibers being twisted prior to weaving them into the fabric.
Different types of Crepe will have different thickness and feel of the texture. Not all Crepe are created equal. Our Crepe is very light weight, airy, soft and has amazing drape and is a woven fabric, so no stretch!

Rayon Crepe is a great fabric for warm weather as it is breathable. You can of course, always make clothing for any season out of any fiber or fabric. It is up to your personal preference. This dress was made from the above pictured fabric. The design is Wild Rose.
When you choose to shop with WayMaker Fabrics, you have the choice to select the base fabric you want your design printed on. We are American Made and print to order. Meaning, we don't print your fabric until you order it.

Dresses are always a really great use for Rayon Crepe. If you're ready to dip your toe into the "woven" stream, try the Rayon Crepe! It has amazing drape and will hide a multitude of mistakes. This dress is made using the Modern Blooms design and of course is made with Rayon Crepe. This was my first successful woven garment. I attribute the success due to the ease of the Rayon Crepe as well as the pattern I used. This pattern is from Copper Creek Patterns, and they have truly amazing directions!

I will warn you, Rayon does shrink more than most fabrics, so make sure you wash it and dry it prior to cutting into it. In addition to dresses, I recommend woven tops that you want to have a lot of flow. If you're looking for a more structured woven top, I recommend the Tencel Cotton or the Cotton Poplin aka Quilting Cotton.
Overall, Rayon Crepe is soft, airy, has amazing drape, a very unique texture to it and is perfect for your spring and summer garments. I definitely recommend it!
