What Are Fabric Bases?

Fabric bases are the underlying materials your designs are printed on. At WayMaker Fabrics, every design can be printed on any of our fabric bases, allowing you to choose the feel, stretch, weight, and performance that best suits your project.

How to Choose a Fabric Base

  1. Select your design.
  2. Choose the fabric base that matches your intended use (garment type, structure, stretch, drape).
  3. Then select your quantity- Sold in 1/2 yard increments.

All fabrics are sold in ½-yard increments. Fabric widths generally range from 55"–62", depending on the base.

Why Fiber Content Matters

Fiber content affects:

  • Comfort and breathability
  • Stretch and recovery
  • Drape and structure
  • Durability and wear
  • How the fabric prints and feels over time

Natural fibers tend to be breathable and soft. Synthetic fibers add strength and stretch. Blends combine the best of both.

Key Fabric Characteristics to Consider

  • Stretch: Important for fitted garments and activewear
  • Weight: Heavier fabrics provide structure; lighter fabrics offer breathability
  • Drape: Determines how fabric hangs on the body
  • End Use: Always choose fabric based on how the finished item will be worn or used
  • Pattern: Check your pattern for fabric recommendations.

Final Takeaway

Choosing the correct fabric base ensures your project looks better, fits better, and lasts longer. Always match your fabric selection to the function of the final garment or product, not just the design.
