A Beginner's Guide to Canvas

The first time I saw canvas being sold by a digital fabric printer, I thought, "What on earth would someone make with canvas?". Then I saw people posting handbags and backpacks and even making shorts, or aprons! I've seen pillows and chairs being recovered. Canvas can be used for a wide variety of projects that need fabric that is thick, and sturdy with no stretch.

Canvas is a great alternative to vinyl or upholstery to create something new or re-create something old!

Here at WayMaker Fabrics, our canvas is brushed, so it is really soft and can be used for a variety of things.

Bags

The most common use for canvas is a handbag or a backpack! Handbags are really popular! Our canvas can be used on a variety of different bags. You can create your own look, with the perfect fabric design! The possibilities are endless.

Shorts

I know it is shocking that canvas can make shorts! Our backside of our canvas is brushed, so it is really soft on the skin, and makes great shorts or even pants, if you prefer.

Canvas is a really amazing fabric and can be used for anything that requires strength and structure. Canvas is considered a heavy weight fabric, and while I want to use the word thick, it isn't really the right word. It is thin enough to fit into any sewing machine or serger, but also thick enough to not rip easily. It is very sturdy and can withstand a lot of rubbing without losing its color.
